Selling courses online in Egypt: payments, subscriptions, and certificates
Having good courses isn't enough to sell them. Between a visitor who likes the content and an enrolled student stands the payment flow, and in Egypt it differs from other markets. Here we review what to set up on your platform to sell smoothly.
The payment methods your customers expect
dLocal estimates the split of payment methods in Egyptian e-commerce roughly as follows: cash on delivery about 40%, Fawry about 24%, international cards about 15%, digital wallets about 8%, and buy now, pay later about 7%. These are a service provider's estimates for e-commerce in general, not official statistics and not specific to courses. Cash on delivery makes no sense for digital courses, so what matters is offering at least two or three of the following methods. Note that Fawry payments work differently: the customer pays at a branch or in an app, and confirmation arrives later, so make sure the course opens only once confirmation arrives, and that the customer gets a message explaining this.
Bank cards
Through a payment gateway.
Fawry
For those without a card. The Moodle plugins directory has a Fawry gateway plugin, so check its compatibility with your version before relying on it.
Mobile wallets
For a segment growing among young people.
Installments
For high-priced programs such as diplomas.
How does payment connect to enrollment in Moodle?
Moodle has a payments subsystem built on gateways added as plugins, and enrollment methods that tie payment to course access. The practical principle: a student is enrolled only after the gateway itself confirms the payment, not merely after they return to your page. Verify this in the integration you use, because the student may close the browser before returning.
Sales models
Fixed-price course
Suits: well-scoped content — Watch for: lifetime access or a fixed period?
Monthly or annual subscription
Suits: a growing course library — Watch for: renewal, cancellation, and refund policy
Course bundle
Suits: a complete learning path — Watch for: price allocation and unlocking courses in order
Scheduled payments
Suits: expensive programs — Watch for: what happens when a payment is late?
Scholarships and discount codes
Suits: partnerships and campaigns — Watch for: usage limits and expiry dates
Bulk sales to companies
Suits: employee training — Watch for: multiple accounts with one invoice
Certificates
The certificate is often what the learner is really buying. Tie it to a clear completion criterion so it isn't issued to someone who didn't finish, and give it a unique number and a verification link. Official accreditation from a government or academic body has its own procedures; don't promise it unless you are actually accredited.
Legal and financial aspects
State the refund policy clearly before payment
Issue an invoice or receipt according to your tax status
And ask your accountant whether e-invoicing applies to you.
Publish a privacy policy explaining what data you collect
Don't keep card data on your server
Let the payment gateway handle it.
Common mistakes
Opening the course before payment is confirmed, or delaying access afterwards without explanation
Only one gateway, losing customers who don't have a card
A vague sales page that doesn't state access duration, content, certificate, and refund policy
Not testing the full payment flow with a small real transaction before launch
Forgetting confirmation messages and receipts
Not tracking the source, so you don't know which campaign brought the sales
Frequently asked questions
Should I sell directly from Moodle or from a marketing site?
Both work. What matters is a clear journey from the sales page to payment to the course. See the platform comparison article.
Do I need a commercial registration?
It depends on your business and on the gateway's and finance provider's terms. Ask an accountant and your payment provider before launch.
How do I protect courses from being shared?
There is no complete protection. Tie access to a personal account, monitor multiple logins, and rely on ongoing value from updates and interaction, not on hiding content alone.
